Hokkaido - Sapporo

Sapporo (札幌市) is the fifth largest city in Japan by population and the third largest by geographic size. It is the capital of the Hokkaido Prefecture. Sapporo is best known outside of Japan for hosting the 1972 Winter Olympics, and the annual yuki matsuri, internationally referred to as the Sapporo Snow Festival. The city is also home to Sapporo Brewery.

We spent a total of 6 nights in Sapporo; the first 2 nights upon arrival from Singapore and the last 4 nights before we flew back to Singapore.

The locals celebrate summer by having such "Ge-tai" style performances. There were stalls selling food and beer. And they were singing English pop songs on stage!

Hokkaido - Otaru

Otaru (小樽市) is a city and port located in Shiribeshi, northwest of Sapporo. At one time, a canal ran through the middle of the town, but now only a portion of it has been preserved. This canal, adorned with Victorian style street lamps, has now become a famous tourist attraction. Otaru is also well known for its quality glassware (apparently comparable to Venice) and its musical boxes.

We made a day trip to Otaru from Sapporo where we were based. The JR train ride took about 45 minutes.
2 purposes for taking this picture: 1) The train ride to Otaru was so crowded that Yuen ended up standing in between carriages next to the train door. 2) The hip hairstyle of the young punk is such a huge contrast to Yuen's hairstyle :P

Pretty glassware from one of the many glassware shops

Yuen taking a break from the walking. The architecture of the buildings in Otaru is quite unique.
Me outside the Musical Box Museum & Shop. The Museum is amazing! They had ALL sorts of musical boxes: Big ones, small ones, wooden ones, glass ones, plastic ones, electric ones, manual ones,.....you get the idea..:)

Hokkaido - Furano - Outlying areas

We spent a total of 4 nights in Furano. We made Furano our base and made day trips from there. Biei (in an earlier post) was one of the day trips out of Furano. The rest of the 3 days were spent exploring Furano and its surrounding areas. We went to numerous flower parks; drove along many windy roads; got lost a couple of times; visited an art gallery; saw some amazing sceneries; and met really warm local Japanese folks.

I had a tough time choosing the pictures to post - there were too many nice ones to choose from!
